Uncharted Nakasendo

Explore the Nakasendo

The Nakasendo Trail is a vast, ancient road stretching between Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo). And the Kiso valley—located in southern Nagano prefecture at the very heart of the Nakasendo—is easily one of the most stunning places to visit in all of Japan.

In recent years a huge number of foreign tourists have been drawn to the area by its long history, natural beauty, and fascinating culture. But until now the language barrier and lack of knowledgeable local guides has meant that most visitors are only able to scratch the surface of what the Nakasendo has to offer. Here at Uncharted Nakasendo, though, we’re looking to change that.

What Makes Us Unique:

Knowledgeable Local Guides

Unlike the vast majority of guides who work along the Nakasendo trail we actually live here. As a result, we’re knowledgeable about the area’s history, nature, culture, and cuisine in a way that only locals can be. With us you’ll see a side of the Nakasendo you won’t find in travel guides or with big tour companies.

Living here also means that we’re dedicated to building a sustainable system of tourism that genuinely benefits the local area and its people, because that’s the kind of place we want to live.

Unique Local Experiences

Try your hand at making traditional washi paper, or sawing your own wooden oroku comb. Visit a lacquerware workshop, or learn how to make soba noodles and wagashi sweets (and then try your best not to eat them all at once).

These local experiences remain inaccessible to all but the most intrepid Japanese visitor, let alone foreign travellers. But we’ve spent years building up a relationship of trust with local artisans, chefs, and other creators, enabling us to introduce our customers to these unique, unforgettable experiences.

Our Walking & Hiking Tours

There are countless amazing routes along the Nakasendo for any level of walking experience, from absolute beginners to the most hardened of mountain climbers.

Walk the scenic trail between Magome and Tsumago. See the sacred Mt. Ontake from atop Tori Pass. Make your way deep into the ravines and mist-covered forests of the Kiso valley.

Our Cultural Experience Tours

We offer a wide variety of tours for those wanting to experience the culture, history, traditional crafts, and food and drink of the Kiso area.

Hands-on lessons on centuries-old woodworking techniques. Sake tastings and gourmet rambles through old post towns. Guided walks through the region’s history, and shinrin-yokuforest bathingto refresh both mind and body.

Whatever your interest is, we can find something that you’re bound to love.
